Travel Insurers trying to stop cover for travelers due to Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)

I took a policy out at the start of March before my trip. I confirmed my policy for the only “Epidemic” word in the policy per the line below which was my contract with Budget Direct

“You being unable to travel because of travel restrictions imposed on you after an epidemic, terrorist attack or natural disaster”

During my travel away , their policy was changed to included the exclusions below

“29. Any claim directly or indirectly arising from an epidemic, pandemic or outbreak of an infectious disease, virus or condition, including any derivative or mutation of such disease, virus or condition, or the threat or perceived threat of any such epidemic, pandemic or outbreak.”

The new stance that insurance policers and underwriters have taken on for cover before the wording in their policy was changed

” If you bought your policy after 4:00pm AEST on 31st January 2020, you will not be covered for claims related to the Coronavirus (2019-nCoV). It would be expected the policy was entered into with awareness of the virus and its developments. “

Highly open for Litigation!

  1. ” If you bought your policy after 4:00pm AEST on 31st January 2020, you will not be covered for claims related to the Coronavirus (2019-nCoV)”.
Well, if the cover was not covering, why did they sell the cover??

    1. Why was this not in their policy?
Why did they only add this information to their policy in March?
Why was this information on their website during purchase?

Basically, they invented a rule to try and close as many claims as possible!

The only defence they did have, is , you cannot take out a policy, knowingly you will be using it, so they could argue that someone took this out, knowingly that the outbreak would occur or get worse

Again , highly open for Litigation!
